I tried the same modeline setting, but ended up with the same result as earlier. It seems that the image corruption is caused by my video driver (savage), and thus there's fairly little that I can do about it. On the plus side I'm just planning to build a new machine using this monitor, and your example shows that the radeon driver supports 1400x1050.
