I use gkrellm and the seti 7 plugin (x11-plugins/gkrellm-seti)  and with
a click of the mouse it stops or starts gkrellm.  Not sure if thats what
your looking for.  If your talking console I saw someone elses
suggestion to send stop to it in init.d.
