Dummy me, I had -gtk in USE.  Not sure what gvim uses when -gtk, but it 
doesn't work.

Even with USE=gtk, I still get locale warnings...

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C

Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C

Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers

But at least it works...
