i'm having the same problem since some months now, the only kernel that is working for
me is 2.4.19-gentoo-r10 (sis745 mainboard, 1GB RAM, all pci slots full with stuff,
abit hotrod 100 hpt370/72 raidcontroller), i'm using the drivers from highpoint which
work very well.

i've tried many kernels from 2.4.20-gentoo-r5, ac-versions up to the latest
2.4.21-pfeifer-r1_pre2, neither of them works

what helps is passing the parameter acpi=off to the kernel, but then again most of the
kernels didn't work on some other points (oopses; though the pfeifer-sources worked
best, gonna try the next version of them)
i'm always using the same config, a bit modified for each kernel of course.
