i just finished installing gentoo on a dell dimension 2350 and after multiple attempts, the only way i could get a stable boot was to complie a kernel without support of my sound card.
I have a Dell Dimension 8250 and use a turtle beach santa cruz which works beautifully with ALSA. My motherboard integrated sound card uses the ICH kernel driver but because I use the turtle beach I don't use this integrated card at all. Try a different sound card perhaps.
Just a general note on Dell machines and Linux is to make sure that your BIOS is fully up to date to rule out that possibility for error.
