I gave win98 the address 192.168.1.2, the gentoo gateway is 192.168.1.2

My guess is you want 192.168.1.1 for the latter. It needs to be the address of the Linux side of the connection, not the Windows side. You're telling Windows the address of the host that will forward its packets to other networks.
