Based on the discussion on the list, I created a
/etc/portage/package.mask file with the following content:

dark-lord root # cat /etc/portage/package.mask
>=net-www/apache-2.0.47
>=dev-db/mysql-4.0.13
>=media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.7

In order to temporarily block those packages from being picked up in the
world update. However:

dark-lord root # emerge world -Up
>>> --upgradeonly implies --update... adding --update to options.

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild    U ] dev-db/mysql-4.0.13-r3 [3.23.56]
[ebuild    U ] net-www/apache-2.0.47 [1.3.27-r3]
[ebuild    U ] media-video/ffmpeg-0.4.7_pre20030624 [0.4.6-r1]
[ebuild    U ] dev-perl/DateManip-5.42a [5.40-r2]
[ebuild  N   ] net-mail/mailbase-0.00-r4
[ebuild  N   ] net-mail/ssmtp-2.48
[ebuild    U ] dev-php/mod_php-4.3.2-r3 [4.3.2]
[ebuild    U-] sys-apps/attr-2.2.0 [20020330]

They are still there.

Is this not the correct way of doing this? If not, what is the correct
way?
