I solved the issue by using the "revdep-rebuild" command which I had never heard of before (I was suggested in IRC to try this one). After reemerging quite a bunch of packages, I was able to compile 'tetex' and after that I could complete the steps mentioned in http://dev.gentoo.org/~satai/sgmlfix.html.
