I use an external Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem (looks like a frog).  
There is a speedtouch ebuild for it.  You have to download the firmware 
for it separately, or pinch it from a Windows installation.  That means 
that for an install from scratch you can't get internet connection 
out-of-the-box ... a bit of a problem for first-time Gentooers.  I do 
installs from an existing linux partition to get over this.
