Do we really need a db backend for portage on our desktops? I would not want these dependancies ;-) I'd rather suggest having http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/index.xml kept up to date automatically (am I missing something or is it terribly out of date most of the time?) with a db backend and have some web frontend for searching through the available apps :-) Of course that does not replace a local search, but it would enhance possibilities a lot. What I do atm when looking for some app to do some specific task is: search google, freshmeat etc to see what could fit my needs and then try to find opinions of other users by searching google again.
