Thanks for your reply, but that didn't work. Also tried deleting .gconf and
.gconfd and recompiling gconf, which didn't work either. I am using the
latest unmasked version of gconf (can't remember the version and I am not
sitting at the machine).
Does anyone know if gconf is particularly sensitive to the compiler flags?
I recently added -fomit-framepointer to -O3 in my flags.

I remember this behaviour back when I was using gnome-session. iirc when
I unticked draw_background in gconf-editor (/desktop/background) it
fixed it somewhat, never know, might be worth a shot.
