"Experimental" but working solution: Check out "effecttester" from kde-cvs, directory kdenonbeta/arts. Let your player output through aRts and use effecttester to add The Synth_STEREO_COMPRESSOR to the master effect-chain. With this you can reduce the dynamics of your dvd's very comfortably.
