generally when you compile external modules (alsa, wireless drivers, etc) that aren't part of the kernel source (luckily, alsa's part of 2.5/2.6), they'll look for the kernel headers in /usr/src/linux. I guess it doesn't really matter if you don't use any external modules, but it's still good practice.
