Yes you can get by with sim links; /var/tmp is the biggy.  I ran
out of space at 3 gig, so it needs a little more than that.  Based on my
recent experience, however, I would say why do it?  The current
oppenoffice-bin builds run almost as fast as those compiled from source,
so for me it's not worth 10+ hours of compiling.
