Error messages would be helpful, but here is a stab.  Is it an
IDE CDROM?  If so, and you re-compiled the kernel, did you
include IDE/ATA CDROM support?  Because that is NOT what you
want.  You want the "SCSI emulation support" a few lines down
from that one (in menuconfig) and then you want "SCSI CD-ROM
support" under the "SCSI support" menu.
