define cleaning .. did you just run mkreiserfs or did you refdisk everything ? 

did you run reiserfsck on the system to check for any problems ?

it should not effect you this badly, but there could be something els ethat might 
effect it like bad hdd or incorrect setting for hdparm etc etc
