By chance do you have ACPI (the power management stuff) enabled in the kernel? If you do, you might try turning it off and see what happens.
When ever I've tried ACPI, it has caused a variety problems ranging from the networking problems you describe to system lockups with the nvidia branded driver. I hope these problems will be ironed out with the 2.6 kernel.
