Depending on your motherboard and chipset, nvidia may not be all that
great either.  I have the latest nvidia drivers, but nvidia will not run
agp with my VIA chipset.  So I get just a little faster glxgears times
with the nvidia drivers than with the standard opengl and X drivers. 
Not really worth the hassle.
