I deleted /usr/portage/profiles/updates/3Q-2003
and then emerge worked (but with this message)

then for the heck of it i did emerge regen--and now I don't have errors! The
manpage says the regen is for non-rsync users. I am set up for rsync and
have been doing emerge sync all along. Why did I need to do a regen?
