Maybe you should add "noapic" to the booting line. I also had strange issues with my Toshiba Satellite 2430 (P4-Notebook) with several kernels from Gentoo 1.4 or Knoppix 3.2. My self-made kernels were only working if "Local APIC support on uniprocessors" (CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC) was completely deactivated in the kernel config. It can help when you try it with a Gentoo 1.2 Boot CD.
