Well, here's how I ended up doing it, but right now I forget where the idea came from (this is from my tcsh .alias file): alias aoeu 'setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -layout us' alias asdf 'setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -layout dvorak' One word of warning for long-term QWERTY users... it is SLOW. I'm basically back to hunt and peck, but slower 'cause the keys are in the wrong place! :) Thanks for all the help, everyone!
