Well, here's how I ended up doing it, but right now I forget where the idea
came from (this is from my tcsh .alias file):
alias   aoeu    'setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -layout us'
alias   asdf    'setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -layout dvorak'

One word of warning for long-term QWERTY users... it is SLOW.
I'm basically back to hunt and peck, but slower 'cause the keys are in
the wrong place!

Thanks for all the help, everyone!  Eventually I'll get it working in the
console too, when I can type more than 5 words a minute.
