what about possibly installing gentoo with a B I G kernel on a usb drive ?

they quite cheap these days and using that to boot and backup off ?

then u can backup to the drive and write cd's whenever u want ?

knoppix includes cd burner, wifi and other goodies... actually its a distro
with 1,8GB compressed to fit on a 700mb cd...

you can even use it as a full featured desktop system running from cd. you
have openoffice, media players, gimp, ... and many more... e.g. for cd
burning
you have k3b (kde application, that is using the cdrecord,mkisofs,...-tools)

you can do nearly everything with it... just try it...
