well i can't help you with the libGL thing, but your resolution stuff is 
handled in your config file.  you should have somethinglike this:

  Section "Screen"

          Identifier  "Screen0"
          Device      "Radeon"
          Monitor     "Monitor0"
          DefaultDepth 24

          Subsection "Display"
            Depth       24
            Modes       "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
            ViewPort    0 0
          EndSubsection

  EndSection

the first value in "Modes..." will be the default resolution in X.
