Can't help you with using GRP - I did a stage 1 over a modem! - but for dial-up I'd suggest editing /etc/conf.d/net.ppp0 and then running "etc-update add net.ppp0 default". You can configure it for dial-on-demand so that you don't have to initiate the connection manually every time. You may find, however, that the connection will be started for no apparent reason.
