Hello everyone,
  I am trying to increase the default volume of my laptop, am IBM

T21. I had a previous unit which was louder that this current one; I
previous one had to be returned to manufacturer due to a massive
failure
after only 2 weeks - I had no problem with that.

  I am trying to bring up alsamixer and alsamixergui, both fail with
the
following error:
star21 root # alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
 directory

Here are the permissions for the mixer device:
star21 root # ls -l /dev/sound/mixer /dev/mixer
lr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root           11 Sep  3 21:31 /dev/mixer ->
sound/mixer
crwxrwxrwx    1 root     audio     14,   0 Dec 31  1969
/dev/sound/mixer

/dev/sound is OSS sound drivers, is it not, and alsa is /dev/snd ? Thats what I think, anyway, but it's not uncommon for me to be wrong.
