I'm afraid I don't know too much about the inner workings of PAM, but I have 
heard no compaint from anyone, even those with lowly 486's, of it slowing 
them down, and it'll be used pretty much by everything password related.
PAM and Shadow are part of system, so can't be removed easily anyway.
