Some very good advice from those I've read so far. One very important thing that you need to learn is document what you do. Keep a log book by the computer and make a practice of writing down every command that you enter so you can un-do what you fiddle with if it doesn't work. You will find that this gives a better cause/effect feedback than your memory will, and it will teach you some lessons about how Linux and Gentoo are put together. This includes editing files, too. Make a backup before the edit that you can restore if needed and record the name of the backup in your log. Yes, I know there is a history file that will list all of your commands. But if you are working in multiple screens (either through X and several windows or through the <ALT>Fn consoles) you won't automatically save them all, only the one that performs the system shutdown or reboot. The others will be lost unless you manually save them. All will be lost if you manage to hose things up to where the system crashes (been there, done that). You also need to have access to the disk to read the history, but a notebook is available all the time. Tom :-}) Thomas A.
