Hmmm... I would ask if /bin/sh is a symlink to /bin/bash but you'll probably tell me it is. Out of curiosity, did you choose an alternate security model in your kernel config? I've never worked with any of them, so I can't attribute it to the errors your getting. Or perhaps extended attributes on the file system that are incorrectly set up? Just a thought...
