i found it after I sent the email. there was already a sym link to the r5 kernel and when i told it to make the link it put a folder link in /usr/src/linux so i deleted the link linux and made a new linux link pointing to r6 then rebooted and retried nvidia kernel and glx and it worked. sorry for the bother.
