Ok...

I just upgraded KDE to 3.1.3 stable finally...
I went to load the new kernel. I was running 2.4.20-gentoo-r5 and upgraded to
2.4.20-gentoo-r7

These are the steps that I took as root.

1> cd /usr/src
2> dir
linux  linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r5  linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r7

3> rm linux
4> ln -s  linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r7 linux
5> genkernel
* Build completed successfully!

 * Please specify /boot/kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r7 and /boot/initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r7
 * when customizing your boot loader configuration files.

 * A detailed log can be found at /var/log/genkernel.log.

Genkernel ran fine...

Now I need to goto grub.conf to update it with the new kenel number......

as root...
1> cd /boot
2> dir
System.map                   boot                     kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r7
System.map-2.4.20-gentoo-r7  initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r7
3> no grub file....what???
4> ls -la
total 3046
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root          256 Sep 15 18:36 .
drwxr-xr-x   17 root     root          384 Sep 11 17:42 ..
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root            0 Sep 15 17:26 .keep
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           27 Sep 15 18:33 System.map ->

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            1 Sep 15 17:26 boot -> .
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root      1445404 Sep 15 18:36 initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r7
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root      1099879 Sep 15 18:33 kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r7

Ok...so the grub directory is totally gone..so I decide to take a look at /etc/fstab

When I look at that file its totall been overwritten as well....

My hair is turning gray now.

I've obviously made a choice somewhere along the way that is making me
scream..........now...

Hopefully I can recover without having to reinstall this for the 3rd time...

Can anyone give me some suggestion as to how I can proceed..

I'm assuming that I can just reconfig /etc/fstab and manually create a grub directory
and
grub.conf file in that directory?

Oh,,, when I try and open another shell window and "su" my password keeps on being
rejected as
well....

What the hell did I do???
