This sounds like a problem with your /etc/X11/XF86Config.
Check your monitor section and pay special attention to your 
horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates. These can be found in the 
monitor's manual or spend a few minutes googeling for monitor specs.
Once you're sure the monitor is configured properly you should be good 
to go. If not, post back with /var/log /XFree86.0.log.
