[gentoo-user] /etc/X0.hosts

I'm running gentoo 1.4.  Xhost works as I expect, but I can't get 
/etc/X0.hosts to do anything.  Is it disabled somewhere?  Am I using
the wrong syntax?

        > xhost
        access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect
        > cat /etc/X0.hosts 
        LOCAL:
        > xhost $(cat /etc/X0.hosts) 
        non-network local connections being added to access control list
        > xhost
        access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect
        LOCAL:
        >
