Yep, good idea. Add an IDS that will auto reboot on detection of problems and you have a pretty good combo. Do a google search for SentryCD. I don't know if it's still maintained or not, but it should be exactly what your looking for. If you were to roll your own, search linuxfromscratch.org for boot-cd hints.
