BTW, all init.d scripts except for those that came with baselayout reside in the <category>/<package>/files directory or below that. For example, the xdm and xfs script are under /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/files/<version> (for me <version> is 4.3.0) and are called xfs.start and xdm.start . So essentially you needn't bother recompiling everything. You should have created a list of installed packages with "epm -qa" or "qpkg -I -v -nc" or "emerge -epD world" or whatever and then look in their respective directories.
