What is your AGP status?

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status:          Enabled
Driver:          NVIDIA

SBA:             Disabled

are you using nvidia AGP or xfree's AGPGART?
glxgears here runs 315 f/sec full screen @1600x1200 16bit
