   The problem I've most seen in this sort of situation is with the
terminal emulation.  Some of the non-ASCII characters in that file end up
getting interpreted in weird ways, with the result that some of the odd
characters get pushed into the input buffer.  So when you hit return, you
end up sending more characters than you thought you were.

   I've found that typing control-U to clear the buffer before hitting
the '1' and then return almost always fixes this.  I'll admit that I have
run into situations where it hasn't, but can't remember if this is one of
them or not.

   What's needed is a modification to the default 'diff' command in
/etc/etc-update.conf to fix the displaying of non-Locale characters...
I should look into that.
