First I would do just as it says:

"emerge --help config" from the command line and look at what it tells you. Do this
first so that
you learn what it is that is happening and why your getting the message in the first
place. This
will help you understand what your about to do somewhat.

Claus, the only time that you will need to worry about updating any files is when the
original
message that you received, pops up. Otherwise Gentoo will merge trivial changes
transparently
without the need of the users intervention.

What you need to be concerned about is what you do when the message above pops up and
why your
doing what your doing.

Why are you haveing to do what your doing is explained if you did what it asked first.
"emerge
--help config"

Once you have read that then you should understand what you will be doing next and
that is
merging differences between existing files and new files that are for the most part
the same. Or
do nothing, or totally replace the old <same files> with the new files. (not good)

So what do you do:

"etc-update"
If you were to do "etc-date" at the time that your received the above message then
your would get
a list of 4 files.
1)filename.foo
filename._cfg0000_foo
2)filename.foo2
filename._cfg0000_foo2

you have 3 immediate choices at the bottom of the above output (-1), (-3) and (-5).
Or you can
choose "1" (which represents the first filename "filename.foo". Choosing "1" basically
brings up
the two file listed next to "1".
You are then given some choices at the bottom of the screen. I usually choose "3" at
this point.
Choosing "3" will do a vimdiff on the two files and list the the diffs between the two
files. You
then choose which diffs you want to merge into this file as a whole. "either whats on
the Left or
whats on the Right"

I'll say no more, because this really wont make any sense until you actually do it. If
you have
any futher questions after executing "etc-update" please do let the list know before
you shoot
yourself in the foot like allot of us have done. I personally only have 2 toes left...
Heh...Heh...
