Trying to install 1.4 on Sony Vaio C1MHP with bootable firewire CD drive.

Using nofb and "dofirewire" seems to boot OK and find the firewire/1394 device
but later fails to find cd dev and drops to v. limited shell.

I have Gentoo on a C1XD - a 400mhz PII picturebook. This part of the install truly was a PITA, but everything since has been fairly straight-forward - it just took a while to work out how to get the frame-buffer working in wide-screen & lots of recompiles for other bits & pieces of hardware.

As HvR points out, the important thing for you at this stage is to get booted-up with any Linux which will allow you to chroot in, download & extract stage3 & compile a kernel. See code listing 8.3 at <http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml#doc_chap8>. Once you have the C1 booting you can worry about anything else afterwards.

I found this list most helpful:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/vaio-pcg-c1-general
I think there are links there to other Linux-on-the-C1 sites; http://www.linux-laptop.net/ is also great, and a Google for "vaio C1 Linux" turns up a few hintful pages.

Please post back if you have any more problems - the more installations of Gentoo on these cute little lappies, the better!

Stroller.
