When I compile new kernels I do cat /proc/config > .config in the kernel root directory (for instance linux-2.4.22) And then the rest of the work make dep bzImage modules modules_install cp <bzImage-location> /boot mv /boot/bzImage <a proper name for instance kernel-2.4.22) And then I use this name for an entrance in lilo.conf (no initrd required)
