I have compiled the kernel with just the SCSI drivers which I though I needed, 
which is basically the Adaptec drivers, execept the RAID one ('cause I'm 
never going to have them anyways). Also, I've compiled them all as modules.

I have not configured it to load on statup, however I did emerge hotplug (and 
maybe this probes my hw at bootup?), and I have always seen this work with 
Mandrake or RH.

Normally in the bootup process it always get to the point where (I really 
don't knwo is it's after loading initrd or not) the SCSI adpaters get probed. 
So when Gentoo hits this point it sees my adapter, but it goes nuts trying to 
activate it or address it, or whatever it tries to do to enable it.

If it helps, I'll try to post the exact error messages taking notes by hand 
(what a ghastly thought ;-)
