Yes, I saw it. I had it with xfce4. I ran the pl script but it choked like yours did. I then did what it said - I removed from var/db/pkg the xfce4 directory referenced. Then the pl script worked.

However, it recommended remergeing xfce4 which I did but it messed up and needed xfree reemerged so I did that and found it died after many hours due to a "bad parameter". Yeah! Right. I merged XFree not long ago with no problem.

Someone posted a note to use the py version of the cleanup script instead of the pl one.

I think someone broke portage! <G>!

I just emerged the above mentioned portage version, and now I'm seeing some
anomalies. I didn't find any bugzilla references.

Has anyone else seen this type of behavior? Is this something that was created
by a problem with an earlier portage version?

Portage errors are spooky!

During the cleanup phase after successful emerge media-gfx/gphoto2-2.1.2, I got
the following:

['dev-lang/perl', '5.8.0', 'r10'] ['dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r10',
'dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r12']!!! COUNTER file is missing for
dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r10 in /var/db.!!! Please run
/usr/lib/portage/bin/fix-db.pl or remerge the package.

Note: 5.8.0-R10 is not the current installed version of perl. Trying the
recommended fix produced the following:

richeypc3 root # /usr/lib/portage/bin/fix-db.pl
Grabbing db contents...
Grabbing mtimes...
fix-db: fatal: couldn't open /var/db/pkg/dev-python/PyXML-0.8.1/CONTENTS: No
such file or directory

Note: 0.8.1 is not the current installed version of pyxml (PyXML).

I did emerge -C dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r10
emerge perl (picked the current version -R12 version)
emerge -C dev-python/pyxml-0.8.1
emerge dev-lang/pyxml (picked the current 0.8.2 version)

Not sure why these weren't properly cleaned before.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to grab a copy of /var/db/pkg before the
correction (isn't hindsight wonderful!) so I can't backtrack this.
