Well, you may not have gnome 2.2 installed but gnome-applets version 2.2.2
may of been left behind.
According to the following lines of output from your system it thinks
gnome-applets 2.2.2 is installed:

Do an `emerge -p unmerge gnome-base/gnome-applets-2.2.2'. The output will
probably look like the following:

gnome-base/gnome-applets
selected: 2.2.2
protected: none
omitted: 2.4.0
If the output does look like this, your system thinks gnome-applets version
2.2.2 is still installed. If so, remove the '-p' option to the command
above to remove it.
If the output looks like the following, gnome-applets version 2.2.2 is
definitely not installed and something else is amuck:
