Then lets try something else.  You can get into kde, right?  Then log in 
as root and start kde.  Go to Control Centre -> System Administration 
-> Login Manager -> Sessions.  I have the two there that live in /etc/
X11/Sessions/, i.e. kde-3.1.4 and Xsession.  If they aren't there add 
them.

I can't think of anything else, except perhaps: at a console, see what 
"which kdm" returns.  If you don't get /usr/kde/3.1/bin/kdm then your 
path is buggered.
