That's likely because they don't assume you'll end up using KDE. Same thing applies to 'gdm' (Gnome's display manager).
using kdm. Any reason not to switch to kdm?
It's just a way to create a "similar" look throughout the whole system. kdm will "look" like KDE. gdm will "look" like Gnome. xdm will "look" like, well....
