No, you would do etcat -d xfree. etcat is part of the gentoolkit package, so you may have to emerge it. man etcat would have told you how the -d flag works.
You could also try posting your list of updates on here. There could be something that is wanting X that somebody else is aware of. Without knowing what packages are needing updating, it's pretty much a shot in the dark.
