Totally depends on your system. On a K7-900 with 512mb ram on broadband it was probably a 6 hour install to the end of make system (ie: no desktop stuff installed). For a full KDE on the same system it was probably 16 hours approx (ie: wild ass guess), and less than that for a full gnome install. Openoffice takes about 24 hours to install on that machine. Some of this can be all shortcut. Using the pre-compiled packages reduces a lot of time for the post-install stuff (ie: kde, openoffice, gnome) and you can download all the source packages ahead of time with "emerge -f kde" (for example) which will simply downlaod the files and not do anything more with them, so they are there when you start the actual compile. Some of the configuration work (getting X configured, etc) can be done of course, while things are compiling in the background. Compiles can also be sped up greatly with distcc if you have another linux box around that you can use to double up on the processing, however this takes a bit of doing and for the first time it might be better to just let your machine go off and do it's thing :) Another tip to perhaps make things faster is to boot up your system with KNOPPIX and copy the /etc/XF86Config to a disk and then use that known working configuration instead of using an X config program. Just a thought. alan -- Alan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - http://arcterex.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- "There are only 3 real sports: bull-fighting, car racing and mountain climbing.
