I deleted earlier posts in this thread so this might not be relevant, but if your problem is that you made changes in /etc/profile and they do not show up when you log into KDE for example then I found that creating file .bashrc in the home directory and adding line:
source /etc/profile
helped and /etc/profile changes were implemented afterwards.
