I have the same problem as you.  These is the command sequence I do in
the installation:

# modprobe 8139too
# lsmod
(8139too loaded)
# net-setup eth0
(I choose "Use DHCP to auto-detect my network settings)
# ifconfig
(It only shows lo and not eth0)
# dhcpcd eth0
(No error message, but it doesn't work)

My computer is a K6-II 450 MHZ w/ 256 MB RAM.

Please help.
