I can't stand nautilus and konqueror and the like. I personally use a little program called Xfe as my file explorer/manager. To my knowledge, there's no gentoo ebuild for it, but compiling it from source is pretty painless. It's very simple and kind of ugly, but it gets the job done in the least obstrusive way. Also supports drag 'n drop in many contexts.
