I would rather expect an increase of 50% in practice with a 2-disk stripeset, in this 
case : (27 + 31) / 2 * 1.5
i.e. a transfer rate of approx. 43.5 MB/sec.

Having the discs on the same cable or not didn't make any difference for me. No 
bottlenecks since we don't exceed the bandwidth of each IDE channel (133 MB/sec, i.e. 
66 MB/sec per single disk).
